Junagadh’s main monumental complex, the Uparkot Fort contains ancient Buddhist monastic caves, 11th Century stepwells and medieval buildings. After the fall of the Mughals in the 1700s, Junagadh became an independent state ruled by Nawabs. The Nawabs built flamboyant palaces, mausoleums and public buildings in eclectic architectural styles. The Mahabat Maqbara is a stellar example of Indo-European-Islamic architecture.
