Lakshadweep, the tiniest Union Territory of India situated in Arabian Sea is considered to be among the most beautiful beach destinations of the country. There are 27 islands in total and each is about 220 to 440 km away from the coast of Kerala. The destination is the ideal spot to experience serene beaches, blue lagoons and water sports. ‘Kavaratti’ is the capital of Lakshadweep and it is also the principal town of the UT . Only 10 of the Islands namely, Agatti, Amini, Androth, Bitra, Chetlath, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy are inhabited. All other islands are uninhabited or sand banks. Tourism is identified as one of the potential driver of the Lakshadweep economy. Considering the same Lakshadweep Administration is taking several initiatives to develop tourism. The Islands are linked with the main land via Ships and Flights. Agatti Aerodrome on Agatti Island is the only airport of the UT. Lakshadweep is linked to the mainland through CIAL (Cochin International Airport Limited). The other islands are also linked by the Pawan Hans Helicopter or Speed Vessel and ship Service.
The Department of Tourism Development, UT Administration of Lakshadweep is engaged in the development of Film Tourism in the UT of Lakshadweep. The pristine beauty, crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, calm lagoons and unique social life offers a different experience for the film industry. This policy calls for devising guidelines to regulate and promote film tourism in Lakshadweep Islands. The film tourism will have an added advantage of free advertisement for the unique beauty of Lakshadweep. Though till recently Lakshadweep was out of reach for the film industry, considering the importance of film tourism, it has been declared as one of the key elements of Lakshadweep Tourism Policy. As part of this endeavour, the Department will be initiating various projects for the promotion of film tourism in Lakshadweep.

Lakshadweep fest is conducted on the occasion of Lakshadweep Formation Day i.e. 1st November of every year. On that day People of Lakshadweep rejoice their formation of Lakshadweep as Union Territory of India. The Fest starts with hoisting of National Flag by the Hon’ble Administrator Lakshadweep. Administration has organized different Local Culture and Tradition events all over the islands. In Kavaratti, the Capital of Lakshadweep, Cultural events are organized. National Minicoy Fest is celebrated as part of promoting Local Culture and Tradition, Cuisines, Folk dance, Traditional and other Water Sports activities, Boat race, Sports activities like Mini Marathon, Swimming. Department of Tourism has been organizing National Minicoy Fest during the month of December for last 7 years. The National Minicoy Fest or NMF as it is known now has become one of major cultural events in the calendar of events in the Lakshadweep.
