The population of Karnataka is  61,095,297. Of this, 50.9% are male and 9.1% are female. the Population density is 319 per km², the sex ratio is 973 females to 1000 males and 38.67% of the people in Karnataka live in urban areas. The literacy rate is 75.4%, with 82.47% of males and 68.08% of females being literate.

History:

The recorded history of Karnataka  goes  back more than two millennia. Several great empires and dynasties have ruled over Karnataka and have contributed greatly to the history, culture and development of Karnataka.

Culture:

Karnataka,has a distinct art and culture with diverse linguistic and religious ethnicity combined with cultural heritage. Apart from Kannadigas, Karnataka is home to Tuluvas, Minor populations of Tibetan Buddhists and Siddhi tribes plus a few other ethnic groups also live in Karnataka. The traditional folk arts are major theatrical forms of coastal Karnataka. Contemporary theatre culture in Karnataka is one of the most vibrant in India.

Veeragase, Kamsale and Dollu kunitha are the popular dance forms. Bharatanatya also enjoys wide patronage.  Karnataka is the only Indian state where both Hindustani and Carnatic singers flourish. North Karnataka is predominantly famous for Hindustani music and South Karnataka is well known for Carnatic music.
