Alibaug and its surrounding villages are the historic hinterland of Bene Israeli Jews, most of them being oil pressers and sellers.Alibaug also houses a magnetic observatory set up in 1904 which serves as one of the significant observatories (run by Indian Institute of Geomagnetism) forming part of a global network. Magen Avot Synagogue is a heritage building with a unique style and is a well-known Indian Jewish and Konkan tourist point. Many famous celebrities have their holiday homes at Alibaug serving as the weekend gateway. Alibaug offers several bungalow options wherein in film shootings take place all round the year.
