National Park-Kanheri Caves Road,
More than 100 Buddhist caves are nestled deep in Sanjay Gandhi National Park in the Borivili region of Mumbai. Before the merge of seven isles, after land reclamation during 19th and 20th century CE, this area was known as the Salsette island. The caves were excavated as early as mid 3rd century B.C. and were in occupation right up to 11th century A.D. The hill in which these caves are excavated was variously known as Krishna-giri, Kanha-giri etc
