The origin of Guwahati could be traced to the ancient city of Pragjyotispur located in the same area as present day bustling city of over 1 million. Several temples of the medieval age dot the city landscape. Of these, the Kamakhya Temple is renowned as one of the most important  Shakti Peeth sites of the country. Millions of devotees visit the temple through out the year. The famous Ambubachi Mela takes place every year during month of June in the Kamakhya Temple.

Guwahati and its adjoining areas provide myriad attractions for the tourist. It has 11 forest reserves, several wetlands including Deepor Beel, a Ramsar Site and hill ranges. Guwahati is also famous for its excavated Archaeological  site at Ambari in the heart of the city. Several parks and ponds dot Guwahati. Guwahati is also a haven for the food aficionado with restaurants and eating joints offering a variety of cuisines.  Among the other notable attractions of the city are the Sankardeva Kalakshetra, State Zoo and Botanical Garden, State Museum etc. Guwahati has also several luxury boats and water vessels that provide cruises on the Brahmaputra.
